Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving. Upon reflection, I know it's not how we celebrate that counts. It's that we remember to be thankful for our blessings -- our family and dear friends, our service men and women and the freedoms our country affords us. Now, let's eat!

Veterans Day

Veterans Day is the American name for the international day called Armistice Day. It falls on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. It is both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states. The same day is observed elsewhere as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day. All major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.

Veterans Day honors America's living veterans.  Memorial Day honors our war dead.  Throughout its history, the United States has had to rely on the sense of duty and sacrifice of its armed forces.  The blood, sweat, toil, and tears of our brave men and women has given us the freedom we so richly enjoy.  Let us never take their noble sacrifice for granted.  For freedom is never free.

We are thankful we have a country where there are people who want to serve by volunteering for the military. We are also grateful that the ideals the country was founded upon are worthy of their service.

Busy October

October is a busy month for me.  Between providing a weekly Boy Scout program and my new supervisory duties at work, I have not had much time for anything else.  I am however, very grateful that I am busy doing things outside of my home instead of being immersed in an online role-playing game.  Real life trumps the virtual world every time.

I always tell my scouts that you serve yourself best by serving others.  Not only am I preaching it, I am living it.  The things you do today can have a lasting impact on someone’s life.  Use your time well..

The Annus Mirabilis Papers

Today in history...

The Annus Mirabilis Papers (from Latin annus mīrābilis, 'extraordinary year') are the papers of Albert Einstein published in the "Annalen der Physik" scientific journal September 27, 1905. These four articles contributed substantially to the foundation of modern physics and changed views on space, time, and matter. The Annus Mirabilis is often called the "Miracle Year" in English or in German, the "Wunderjahr".

September 11

Today is a day of refelection and melancholy for me.  To me this day is very personal, I knew someone that died eight years ago.  Her name was Barbara Edwards, she was a German and French Teacher at Palo Verde High School.  She was a wonderful woman.  Barbara was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 77 that hit the Pentagon.  People got up that Tuesday morning not even realizing that it was the last day of their lives.  A lot of people including myself divide up their lives before and after September 11, 2001.

The passage of time has not dulled the pain and anguish I experienced on that day.  All I can do today is to stay vigiliant and never forget.

Psalm 25:2-3
In you I trust, O my God. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame, but they will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse.
